Barriers

While deciding a topic to write about my mind wandered to my uncle who just left America. He was visiting my family from Germany. My uncle is one of the most hilarious men you will ever meet. I never really understood his jokes when I was younger but i knew he was funny. The faces he made, his laugh, and even his tone of voice. My point is I knew he was hilarious before I even knew what language he was speaking. Now obviously the jokes make much more sense but are equally as hilarious.

Language is commonly thought about as a barrier between people. And while I can understand that I also believe language has little bearing on the relationships we create.

I recently had to say goodbye to a friend who was in America from Germany as well. To say goodbye to someone I was so close with was terrible. We cried a lot and got some amazing raccoon eyes from it. We still keep in contact and send each other postcards and silly videos over the phone. No matter how many times she said her English was terrible, or how many times we laughed at my flawed German we stayed close and understood how one another was feeling.

Language is just a word in every language not a barrier

  1. I agree 100% my aunt who is deaf grew up as the only deaf student in high school. No one knew how to talk to her so decided to stay away thinking it would be easier for them.
